The first Community Food Centre in Canada’s Arctic region
First established in the 1990s as a soup kitchen in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre (QCFC) has been responsive to the community’s changing needs over time, adapting its approach to food.
The Community Food Centre transformed from a soup kitchen to a culinary skills training facility to the place it is today: a vibrant, welcoming place for the community to gather over tasty and nutritious food, with funding from the federal, territorial, and city governments, private foundations, and many individual donors. QCFC supports Inuit food sovereignty by incorporating country food into programming at every opportunity.
The partnership with Right To Food provides funding for core operations and support to QCFC to build up programming and further increase community members’ access to food, resources, and supports.
