Hope House Guelph Community Food Centre: Colleen’s Story
December 16, 2025
When Colleen first walked through the doors of Hope House Community Food Centre, she wasn’t a student or a volunteer, she was simply someone searching for a break.
Life had been heavy for a while. She’d reached out to other places for help but found herself feeling judged, as if her story had to be proven before she could be seen. Then, a friend mentioned Hope House Guelph CFC.
“I remember walking in and being greeted with smiles,” Colleen recalls. “I asked the intake support worker if I needed to declare my income, and she said, ‘We don’t need that. If you’re here, you need help and that’s all that matters.’”
Those words stayed with her. They lifted a weight she’d been carrying, and they marked the beginning of a new chapter.
At this CFC, Colleen was able to access the Food Market, a welcoming space stocked with fresh produce, pantry essentials, and household items, along with other resources that she needed. For her, it wasn’t just about receiving food; it was about being treated with dignity, having choices, and feeling part of a community where everyone looked out for each other.
Years later, Colleen returned, this time, not seeking support but as a placement student. The once-quiet visitor had become a bright, steady presence in the building. She helped wherever she was needed, and the café kitchen was always filled with the warm smell of cookies and treats she baked for volunteers and staff.
After her placement ended, Colleen didn’t leave. She came back as a volunteer, serving in both the Clothing Market and the Food Market, giving back to the same community that once uplifted her.
And this year, Colleen graduated with honours as an Addictions and Community Service Worker, proof of how compassion can help someone rebuild from the inside out.
When asked what she wants people to know about Hope House, Colleen doesn’t hesitate:
“
There’s no judgment here. Just kindness, understanding, and a place where you’re seen for who you are.
”
