A Better Life Foundation’s founding principle is that everyone deserves access to a better life. We take aim at food insecurity in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) by providing daily meals, training, and education to make a direct, meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most. Our practices include food recovery and inclusive hiring and we work to end other forms of inequities including barriers to employment, social isolation, stigmatization and ostracisation. Operating since 2012, our team prepares and delivers over 1,500+ meals daily to SROs (single-room occupancy hotels), shelters, and various community organizations working in the DTES, 365 days per year. In the last ten years with a small team and a large amount of passion, we have accomplished 5 Million of meals delivered to our community and much more. The people we serve are some of the most vulnerable in our country. Having access to nutritious and reliable daily meals is part of the platform of stability, along with housing, needed for upward mobility for those dealing with poverty, mental health issues, disability, addiction, and the ongoing effects of settler colonialism.
