The Chaleur Bay Watersheds Group (Groupe des Bassins Versants de la Baie des Chaleurs – BVBC) is a non-profit environmental conservation organization dedicated to protecting the natural heritage of the Chaleur Bay region in New Brunswick. The BVBC’s work primarily involves creating and managing various environmental projects. Their activities include: Environmental Monitoring: Regularly collecting data and assessing the health of rivers, streams, and lakes within their expansive territory, which covers approximately 1,600 km² and includes municipalities like Belledune, Belle-Baie. Species at Risk Protection: They actively work to protect vulnerable species found in the region. Notable examples include monitoring populations of the Maritime Ringlet butterfly and Bank Swallows. Restoration Projects: Engaging in ecological restoration efforts, which can include restoring riparian zones (areas along riverbanks) and implementing “living shoreline” projects for coastal protection and habitat creation. Community Awareness and Education: Raising public awareness about environmental issues, the importance of healthy watersheds, and how daily actions can impact water quality and ecosystems. They also work to educate the community on topics like natural infrastructure and coastal naturalization as climate change adaptation strategies. Watershed Management Planning: Contributing to the development of comprehensive management plans for the watershed, often in collaboration with partners.
