Food Uniting Neighbours (f.u.n.) is a co-design project based at Shelldale Community Centre, focused on improving food access in the Onward Willow neighbourhood. Built on the Our Food Future initiative and funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Healthy Canadians and Communities Fund, f.u.n. is led by 12 Community Advisors alongside staff from the University of Guelph and 10C Shared Space, with support from partners like Guelph CHC, The SEED, and Wellington-Dufferin Public Health. In May 2022, f.u.n. engaged 87 community members to identify barriers to food access and shape solutions. This work sparked five pilot programs: The SEED gift card program, food transportation support, cooking workshops, home gardening, and community cafés. We now host a weekly drop-in lunch at the Shelldale Gym, offering a free meal, coffee, take-home food, and access to The SEED’s sliding-scale market, while also connecting participants to community services. As f.u.n. grows, we recognize the interconnected challenges faced by our community. Our team advocates with and for residents to ensure everyone can access support. In Phase 2, we are expanding our work to Centre Wellington, strengthening our mission to build vibrant, supported communities with nourishing food for all.
