Fireweed Food Co-op (FFC) is a multistakeholder community services cooperative made up of producer members and community members. Our work encourages the growth of the local food sector in Manitoba by weaving connections and facilitating collaboration between producers and buyers of local food, increasing opportunities for economic participation at all levels, co-creating the infrastructure required for sustainable and ongoing economic success, and identifying and developing the wholesale readiness education required to advance the sector. Acting as a liaison intermediary, we encourage greater production of local food and stronger rural economies, ultimately resulting in more of Manitoba’s local food on the plates of Manitoban consumers. As a cooperative, FFC builds trust through our network and connections; our co-op producer members and customer members engage with our network as an additional, complementary food system to address the failings of larger corporate intermediaries who work at an economy of scale that excludes small to medium-scale local food producers from the market and create many barriers for customers wanting to access local foods.
