The Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario (FAN-NWO) is a network-building nonprofit that brings people together to co-create socially, ecologically, and economically resilient food systems. Formerly the Thunder Bay Food Action Network (1995-2013) and the Thunder Bay + Area Food Strategy (2014-2025), we incorporated in 2025 after three decades of community food organizing. We believe food is a right and that food systems must be rooted in justice, reciprocity, and circularity. Through collaboration, education, and action, FAN-NWO supports regional food economies, emergency preparedness, climate resilience, and community empowerment. We act both upstream, challenging systemic barriers to food access, and downstream, supporting harm-reduction and direct response. Our work honours the lands, waters, and cultures that shape our region. We envision food sovereign and climate resilient communities with the power and resources to shape their food futures. In this future, regional economies are regenerative, culturally appropriate food is a right, and thriving communities and ecosystems sustain one another. Our core values of food sovereignty, justice and equity, ecological and climate resilience, regional and circular economies, and emergency preparedness guide all aspects of our work, and are grounded in a commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
