Food Stash Foundation has a two-fold mission: prevent good food from going to waste and provide dignified food access to promote a thriving planet and a healthy community. Food Stash was founded in 2016 by David Schein, a local Vancouver-based teacher inspired to reduce food waste. Today, we are a registered charity rescuing over 130,000 pounds of surplus food per month, redistributing it to 50 community-serving nonprofit partner organizations, and providing it directly to community members through our programs. Our Rescued Food Box program delivers a weekly box of nutritious food to over 110 member households with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Our weekly Rescued Food Market is a low-barrier, zero-waste market open to all, regardless of income, serving up to 160 shoppers per week. We stock the market with nutritious food from farms, grocers and wholesalers. The Market serves as a space to celebrate food, promote an equitable circular economy, and raise awareness about food waste. The food we rescue is quality surplus perishable food that grocery stores, wholesalers and farms would otherwise throw away due to overstocking, cancelled orders, an approaching best-before date, or not meeting aesthetic standards.
