Mind Your Food

Supporting youth mental health through food, culture, and connection

Mind Your Food is a hands-on program designed to promote positive mental health in young people aged 13 to 19 through food-based learning. Over 11 weeks, youth explore nutrition, food traditions, and food justice—while building skills, community, and confidence.

Through cooking, storytelling, and cultural reflection, participants deepen their knowledge of food, strengthen their leadership skills, and gain a sense of pride in their identities and communities.

I love cooking for my family and learning about new cultures through their food. This program is so much fun and I wish it would last forever. Now, I always look forward to Thursdays.

Since launching in 2019, Mind Your Food has supported over 400 youth in communities across the country—including Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Iqaluit, Natoaganeg First Nation, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.

How partners bring the program to life:

  • Cooking and sharing meals together
  • Mindfulness practices and food journaling
  • Sharing food stories with family and Elders
  • Field trips like fishing, kayaking, and medicine picking
  • Harvesting and donating fruit back to the community.

Mind Your Food is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Mental Health Promotion Innovation Fund, with additional support from the Balsam Foundation and the Timothy Eaton Memorial Committee.
